“Ashi” in Japanese means “foot” and “atsu” means “pressure.” Ashiatsu offers deep, gliding compression and traction using the therapists feet. Ashiatsu may also include some work with the therapists hands, forearms or elbows with passive or active stretching. Because the foot offers a larger surface area compared to the hand, the therapist is able to deliver broader strokes. Add to that the therapist’s ability to use her body weight and gravity to deliver a deeply compressive massage that helps relieve chronic tension and myofascial restrictions without pain. Bars on the ceiling provide the therapist with extra stability, support and balance.
Foot hygiene is maintained with the utmost care. Therapists regularly exfoliate and moisturize their feet to maintain soft, smooth soles. Feet are washed before each treatment.
